The Volley Boast is something of an uncommon shot but you should always seek to learn about all aspects of the game and its shots, as there will be times when this shot is invaluable.
When played at the right time, it is commonly an outright winner or will assist in winning the point, as it is a shot which has the potential to really catch your opponent cold due to hitting multiple walls low down at high speed. With this in mind, it can be a useful Return of Serve option to throw in every now and then to keep your opponent guessing.
Play a good volley boast in four quick steps:
- Make sure you apply the general principles for playing a good Volley shot, such as taking the ball as early as you can to take even more time away from your opponent with those of playing a good Boast.
- Racket above the ball – Get your racket up above the ball so that you can easily execute a high to low swing and bring the ball down low.
- Angle – As with going for a Trickle Boast, I’d recommend aiming for the ball to hit the side wall close to the corner so that it will hit the front wall close to the corner as well, or just before the middle of the front wall, putting it into a difficult area to retrieve shots from.
- High to Low swing – Make sure your swing goes from high to low so that the ball comes downwards dangerously and bounces twice high up the court.
